Do you understand how you sense the world?

Did you know that you start making sense of the world in the womb, you learn what relaxes the heart beat you are growing next to and what makes it accelerate.

Everyone’s Brain is different, no one senses things the same and we all process the sensory input in their own way.

Do you hear electric? Some people do. Do you prefer to be on your own in calm, quiet environments, do you seek out noise and busyness, do you struggle to feel pain unless its so intense. Do you know that you might do a bit of everything depending on your bucket.

So what do I mean by bucket? Everyone has only so much in them on a hourly, daily, weekly and so on basis right?! If you think you have the same each day, lucky you. Many of us don’t, it all depends on how much our body has sensed that hour, day, week even minute.

When your bucket is full this can result in sensory overwhelm, which can be shown through behavioural, emotional or physiological behaviour. Sometimes this may be confusing as one day you are dancing around to loud music with your friend, partner, child and the next day you do the same and you get shouted at for been too loud or other change of behaviour. This is a clear sign that the bucket is more full then previously and they don’t have the capacity for this sound today.

A couple of examples when senses filled my bucket, I run every morning and last year I bought waterproof coat, leggings and socks perfect I will no longer be a drown rat when I get home. Well the coat it had so many bits that were rubbing on my face, blowing about I had never found my run so hard. From all my learning I realised its the noise of the material, as waterproof material is hard to be water resistance it creaks every move I make so I would come home exhausted when wearing it. So options don’t run in rain, continue to get wet or since I understood my senses, I now wear a ear warmer and that drowns out the noise so much better. I can still hear it, however its not as intense so doesn’t fill my bucket as quickly.

Another one we went on holiday last year, my anxiety was through the roof already no spoons from the start, I choose seats near the front so I would be on and off quickly, however what I hadn’t thought about was the noise. The cabin crew opening and closing the draws, well actually they bang them. The smells from them cooking the food, I couldn’t stop watching them either and I could sense how unserious one guy seemed at his job, all he did was chit chat and I did not feel safe one bit.

So that’s another thing we don’t just take it sounds, smells to name a couple of things we sense. We sense people, if someone or something even an animal is been told off or is upset, I feel their feelings. I am like a sponge and I absorb it all.

What do you sense? Have a think as you walk through your day.

This is a major area I coach clients on as understanding yourself and how you sense the world can have a very negative impact on your bucket, it can leave you feeling low, empty, exhausted to name a few. If you could understand, you can adapt, you can be kind to yourself on a day you know is going to be a high intense sensory day to let you recover.

As always I am here to help you, please get in touch and lets work together to make the world an easier place for you.
